| PORK |
Products |
The main reason pork tastes the way it does is how you raise it. We feed them no hormones, antibiotics or growth steroids. They have 24/7 access to a paddock where they can get outside to play, root around and just enjoy being a pig! Earlier in 2008 we raised a couple breeds. Sales were great! Everyone enjoyed the quality of the pork... including us! |

NEWS FROM THE FARM One breed we raised were Tamworths. We kept three of the good looking gilts for breeding. Then we obtained a Tamworth boar, whom we've appropriately named Humpfrey! In July we arranged a meeting between Humpfrey and one of the gilts Precious and, you guessed it! On October 26th we found ourselves with nine fine-looking piglets!

What is a Tamworth? Tamworth is a very old breed originating in Ireland and developed further in England. It is a red colored pig with a long body and stout legs. It is considered a “bacon hog”, that is to say leaner. It is said to be good on pasture, thriving well on grass and forage. The Tamworth was brought to Canada in the 1800’s and in 1882 purported to have entered into the U.S. |

Our Tamworths will not be available until 2009. But to satisfy your urge for pork, we obtained several American Landrace feeder hogs and have been raising them on our farm to be available in late December. The 2008 prices for Landrace Pork are:

Order either a whole or half hog. Expected hanging weight for a whole is around 200 lbs. We will provide you a cutting order about a month in advance. If you have never filled out a cutting order, have no fear! We'll walk you through it. Normal choices include chops, loin & shoulder roasts, steaks, ribs, ham, bacon, sausage, liver, heart. You can decide on the thickness of each cut and the weight in each package, customizing it for your family. We use a local meat processor to butcher and package our product. They individually vacuum seal each package in heavy plastic, suitable for freezing. |

NEWS FROM THE FARM We have 3 Tamworth gilts for breeding: Priscilla, Penelope and Precious. Now that Precious has given birth, we will decide on a schedule for the other two gilts. We expect our Tamworth pork to be available in mid-2009. Currently the hogs are housed at our barn with access to an outside paddock 24/7. Sometime in 2009 we hope to move them to a new home at the north end of the farm where they will have access to both woods and fields. |
